The Climate Crisis Vote

Vote Now on the Best Climate Crisis Ad to Run in USA Today

Vote now for the Climate Crisis Ad that will appear in USA Today.

Help the NRDC Action Fund run a hard-hitting ad that will mobilize Americans in support of a strong global warming bill.Vote now on the best ad to run in USA Today.

Dear kristine,Can you take a quick look at these two hard-hitting ads?

I need you to help us decide which ad we should run in USA Today in order to mobilize millions of Americans in support of a strong global warming bill.

Please vote now — because we don’t have a moment to lose before our elected leaders decide whether America will finally respond to the greatest environmental threat of our time.

In just a few weeks, the Climate Security Act (S. 2191) will move to the floor of the U.S. Senate. This bill is a vital step toward preventing the most costly and devastating disaster humankind has ever known.

But we’ll only get one chance to strengthen and pass this climate crisis bill in 2008 before the elections go into full swing. So we must act swiftly and decisively.

We face a daunting challenge. We need 60 Senators for a filibuster-proof majority to get a strengthened Climate Security Act passed. That means we must build a groundswell of public support in all 50 states that no Senator can afford to ignore.

Big Coal has already hit the airwaves with an estimated $50 million ad campaign designed to weaken or defeat any global warming bill.

It’s time to counterattack with our own ad.

That’s where you come in. Once you help choose which ad to run in USA Today, we will kick off a nationwide campaign that unleashes unstoppable momentum for passage of the strongest possible global warming bill.

So please cast your vote for the winning ad now.

Our planet can’t afford to wait another year for America to take action. A full-scale climate crisis is upon us — and the distress signals from all over the Earth get louder every day.

With enormous ice sheets collapsing in Antarctica…the steepest decline in Arctic sea ice on record…and two-thirds of the polar bear population headed for extinction by 2050, the time for action on global warming is now.

This vote is your single best chance to shape the national dialogue on this critical issue and compel your own Senators to take effective action.

We won’t get a second chance to pass this bill in 2008. So please cast your vote before midnight, Eastern Time on Friday, April 18.

Sincerely,
Frances

Letting the Buffalo Roam

Bison and CalfTens of millions of bison once thundered across much of North America, helping shape the landscape and keeping grasslands healthy.

Now the Yellowstone bison — some of the last wild bison in North America — face slaughter. As they leave the park’s boundaries in search of winter feeding grounds, they are either hazed back into the park to possible starvation or shipped off to slaughter. This winter alone, a record number of bison — more than 1,300 — were killed by federal and Montana state officials.

Defenders is working to end to this modern-day bison slaughter by collaborating with state and federal officials to develop a more science-based bison management policy. We’re also working to ensure that the buffalo can once again roam on thousands of acres of national forests and other public lands.

Born in freshwater rivers and streams, salmon spend most of their lives in the open ocean. When they return to freshwater to spawn in the very same places where they were born, many have traveled hundreds of miles to reach their destination. Salmon off the coast of California and Oregon are in such a severe decline that federal officials have called off this year’s fishing season — an unprecedented move.

Save newborn buffalo from slaughter. Speak out now

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Stop the Brutal Slaughter of Yellowstone’s Wild Buffalo!

Help save Yellowstone's baby buffalo from the slaughterhouse.

Right now, wild buffalo are being rounded up in Yellowstone National Park and shipped to the slaughterhouse. Next month, their newborn calves will also be killed. Speak out now to put an immediate stop to this government-sponsored massacre.

Help NRDC shield Yellowstone's buffalo from slaughter in the weeks ahead.

Dear kristine,

Yellowstone’s wild, free-roaming buffalo herd is under siege.

The Bush Administration is turning the herd’s birthing ground into a killing ground for hundreds of mighty bison — better known as American buffalo.

We must speak out against this cold-blooded cruelty NOW — because every week, more of these noble creatures are being herded into cattle trucks to be slaughtered.

This winter alone, more than 1,200 wild bison have been brutally killed — or shipped to slaughterhouses — by the Montana Department of Livestock, with the cooperation and approval of the National Park Service.

And come May, newborn calves are just as likely to be killed as their mothers.

We cannot stand by and let this massacre continue: Send a protest message now.

Right now, it’s still winter in Yellowstone, and these unsuspecting buffalo are following historic migratory routes in search of food at lower elevations where there is less snow.

When the buffalo venture near or beyond the park’s boundary, they will continue to be rounded up and killed — unless we start a national outcry.

What makes this sacrifice so senseless is that it’s all to protect roughly 200 domestic cows and steers that graze near the park from the theoretical risk of a disease — brucellosis — that has never been transmitted from bison to cattle in a natural setting.

Even more tragic, newborn calves and their mothers will be rounded up this spring in their birthing ground of Horse Butte, Montana – a completely cattle-free zone — which means they are being killed for absolutely no reason.

Please speak out and stop the slaughter. Yellowstone’s buffalo are a national treasure: America’s last, free-roaming herd. The National Park Service should be their guardian, not an accomplice to their execution.

Already, more than 90,000 Americans have submitted protest messages demanding that the National Park Service call a halt to the killing.

But now with so many newborn buffalo about to be killed — we need to do more. Please submit your protest message and help us stop the spring massacre.

Together, we must speak out to spare the lives of Yellowstone’s surviving buffalo so that they can again roam wild and free.

Sincerely,
Frances
